Van Ngoc's Prison, an extraordinary artistic dwelling, has stood proudly since its construction in 1999. Initially conceived as the primary residence for Van Ngoc's family, it swiftly transformed into the epicenter of his creative pursuits. This space not only bore witness to the ebbs and flows of the artist's personal life but also marked the evolution of his artistic journey.
As Van Ngoc immersed himself in the realms of abstract impressionism and installation art, his home metamorphosed into a work of art in its own right. The three-story residence is adorned with an array of substantial sculptures strategically placed amidst integrated mirrors, metal pipes, wood chunks, and ropes. Dark backgrounds and subtle lighting create a dense, immersive atmosphere on the lower floors, gradually giving way to more open spaces and external light as one ascends.
Contrary to its name, Van Ngoc's Prison is not a place of confinement but rather a living space where the artist and his family reside. The term "prison" holds symbolic significance, representing a juxtaposition of inherently complimentary yet contradictory elements.
Much like yin and yang, staying in the dungeon of darkness teaches one to appreciate light. Flesh becomes both the containment of "spirit" and "thoughts" and an extension of life. Being chained is a prerequisite to being freed. Van Ngoc believes that recognizing one's "prison" is a pathway to true enlightenment and freedom.
